Acupuncture and Low AMH

Acupuncture and Low AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone)

What is AMH?

AMH stands for Anti-Mullerian Hormone. It is also called MIS ( Mullerian Inhibiting Substance). AMH levels do not vary with the menstrual cycle.

AMH can be used for:

1. Evaluating ovarian reserve/fertility

2. Evaluating ovarian response in IVF - Women with low AMH levels are more likely to be poor ovarian responders in an IVF cycle.

3. Measuring ovarian aging

AMH versus FSH

A Day 3 FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) test is commonly used to determine a woman's ovarian reserve. However, the FSH results may vary from cycle to cycle, vary with your cycle dates, and a high estradiol level will artificially suppress a high abnormal FSH level into the normal range.

Acupuncture Treatment and Low AMH

Like high FSH levels, low AMH levels according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) indicate a deficiency in kidney yin energy, which is normally needed to make good, fertile eggs.

As in Western medicine, fertility declines with age, in Chinese Medicine, the kidney yin and energetics of the kidneys decline as we get older. A fertility acupuncturist would aim to nourish kidney yin to optimise fertility, and promote energy and blood flow to the uterus.
